Product Description

The Littlejohn's Grill Story

by Vince Jackson

5 1/2" x 8 1/2"

223 Pages

There was once an African American nightclub located along Clemson’s eastern edge that became a magnet for talented blues, rock and jazz musicians visiting the Upstate. Just as WWII was ending and Jim Crow laws came under assault from those recognizing the injustice of segregation, Horace Littlejohn opened a café in the Central/Clemson area. During the 20 plus years of Littlejohn’s Grill’s operation many star performers and soon to be stars entertained at the Grill:  Otis Redding, Jackie Wilson, James Brown, Little Richard, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Jimi Hendrix, Louis Armstrong, Louis Jordan, Erskine Hawkins and Harry Belafonte just to name a few of the more than 100 major performers hosted by the Grill.

Jackson’s book reveals this largely unknown historical cavalcade of performers visiting Clemson in a 224p. look at a segregated Clemson and how popular music broke down the racial barriers of the time. Must read for any Clemson history buffs.
