The "Clemson 8" Challenge

Posted by

In April 1942, Col. Ben Skardon (currently 103-1/2 years old, Clemson Class of '38) and seven other Clemson alums were surrendered in the Philippines and forced to endure the Bataan Death March. They all survived the March. But, tragically, five died in POW camps. Together, they are The "Clemson 8".

The "Clemson 8" Challenge was originally created as a way to keep "Col. Ben" moving. It has grown in to so much more! In December 2020, Col. Skardon lamented that he was having trouble motivating himself to get up and get out walking. He was missing his "carrot" for motivation. That "carrot" being the Bataan Memorial Death March in New Mexico where he annually participated from 2007-2019. Most years he walked 8+ miles in the desert in honor of those men who endured the March in 1942.  Last year the event was cancelled at the last minute due to the pandemic and he knew it would be cancelled again this year. The "Clemson 8" Challenge has been created to be that "carrot" - a reason to get up and get moving - not just for Colonel Skardon, but for everyone! The event has been designed so you can challenge yourself (and others) to walk, run, bike, hike, or march as little as 8 miles in 8 days, or as much as a full 26.2 marathon in one day.

The "Clemson 8" Challenge is "virtual" meaning you can do this in your hometown or wherever you want. You can even select your own course: flat, hilly, or a combination. The dates for the Challenge are: March 21 - 28, 2021.

Col. Skardon plans to walk eight miles in eight days! What will you do?
